U4GM's Diablo 4 Greater Lair Key Guide
#1
Greater Lair Keys look like another currency in Diablo 4's crowded endgame, but they actually decide whether your boss grind feels focused or aimless. The best routine I've found is to build standard keys, clear Initiate bosses quickly, and spend the resulting rewards with a specific Unique in mind instead of burning every resource the moment it appears; that leaves more room for smart spending on D4 Gold and crafting supplies.

The Key Loop, Without the Guesswork

You don't need a Greater Lair Key to start a Greater-tier boss encounter. The key is used after the fight, when your personal Hoard opens. That detail changes group farming: joining someone else's summon helps you kill the boss, but you still need your own key to claim the full reward.

Start by collecting standard Lair Keys through War Plans, Helltides, World Bosses, Legion Events, and Tree of Whispers caches. Use those keys on Initiate Lair Bosses such as Beast in the Ice, Grigoire, Lord Zir, Varshan, and Urivar. Greater Lair Keys can appear inside their Hoards, while War Plan rewards offer another source. Open every eligible Hoard; killing the boss and leaving the reward untouched breaks the progression loop.

Farm for Clear Speed, Not Bragging Rights

Higher Torment looks attractive, especially with Season 14 rewards scaling upward, but the highest setting isn't automatically the best farming choice. A build that clears a lower Torment boss in half the time can produce better keys, experience, and materials per hour than a slower high-Torment setup. From what I've seen, deaths and long boss phases hurt the grind more than players expect.

Pick the Initiate boss your current loadout kills fastest.
Run several keys in one session so travel and menu time stay low.
Keep Stygian Stones available for flexible conversions when one Greater key type refuses to appear.
Save Greater keys for a boss whose Unique pool matches your build plan.

Know Which Key Tier You're Holding

Greater and Superior Lair Keys serve different purposes. Greater keys support the middle stage of boss progression, while Superior keys open the top seasonal boss Hoard, including Corrupted Reaper rewards in Season 14. Deathtoll Chambers are the main route toward Superior keys at high Torment, so don't spend every resource on Greater farming when your actual goal is Mythic gear or Pandemonium Fragments.

The Returning Items Need More Than Familiar Names

The Season 15 test preview lists Leoric's Crown, Nemesis Bracers, Stone of Jordan, Squirt's Blouse, Arioc's Needle, Henri's Perquisition, In-Geom, The Furnace, and Messerschmidt's Reaver. The last item is planned but wasn't active in the current test build. These legacy Uniques are intended as permanent additions, yet their real value depends on how they compete for slots, aspects, resource effects, and weapon flexibility.

Leoric's Crown stands out because its Diablo 4 version links the helm slot to the gem placed there, giving socket planning a fresh angle. Stone of Jordan must fight against strong ring options, while two-handed weapons such as The Furnace give up the flexibility of separate weapon slots. I could be wrong but, that tension is healthier than handing every class a mandatory old favorite; the best items should create a build choice, not erase one.

What I'd Do Before Season 15

For live Season 14, build a reserve of standard and Greater keys, then target bosses around the slot your build actually lacks. For the test preview, treat every returning Unique as provisional because powers, costs, and class interactions can change before release. The proposed Horadric Cube upgrade is especially worth watching: it would let a chosen Unique keep its affixes, Tempering, and Masterworking while becoming Mythic quality, though the Crafted tag and one-item restriction still matter.

That system could make a great Unique feel like the start of a long-term project rather than disposable loot. Keep your best rolls, avoid spending scarce materials on temporary upgrades, and check patch notes before committing to a new meta setup. A focused key stash and a careful item budget will serve you better than chasing every shiny drop, especially when cheap Diablo 4 materials can help cover the routine crafting costs later.
